You’ve probably never heard of Xiongmai, but they have millions of devices in action all around the world, often under different brand names. In fact, they have over 100 different brand names. It was recently discovered that almost nine million of their CCTV cameras and DVR devices are vulnerable to basic attacks. The Vulnerabilities In what is an incredibly common vulnerability, it was discovered that both Xiongmai cameras and DVRs had a default admin username and password, with no requirement to change it. These credentials are hardcoded, meaning that there is no real way to disable the default admin credentials. It was also discovered that there were multiple unencrypted communication channels, and a failure to check for the integrity of firmware updates, none of which are signed. In an age of aggressive data grabbing and monetization, it’s no surprise that VPN usage has been on the rise in recent years.
