How We Found $400+ in Savings on Plane Tickets – SaferVPN blog

If you want an easy trick that may help you save money on flight tickets BIG TIME, read on. We’ll tell you all about how to see better deals on airline tickets! (Spoiler alert: it has to do with using a VPN!)

In this blog, we’ll tell you:

Traveling is easily considered one of the best experiences in life, but it can be quite expensive – especially the airfare. Even with discount airlines and holiday deals, booking a flight can often be financially overwhelming.

How Travel Companies Know Your Location

One of the most challenging parts about traveling is finding the best deals. Sure, there are plenty of comparison websites that might save you a few bucks, but it can take hours to sift through all the options out there. You may even notice that the more you search, the higher the prices go! The reality is, these websites often track your searches and in turn, increase flight rates in parallel with the demand rate.

These are the ways that websites can determine your location:

  • IP Address: An Internet Protocol (IP) address is essentially your unique “address” on the internet, telling websites where you are located.
  • Cookies: Cookies personalize your browsing experience by tracking and storing some of your activities. As travel sites sense that you’re doing several searches for the same query, they simply increase the flight’s price.
  • GPS on handheld devices: Websites can use your mobile’s or tablet’s GPS to see where you are located, and then use that to determine which pricing to offer you.
  • Wi-Fi: If you’re browsing through Wi-Fi, websites can track your location if you give them permission.
  • Geo-location coding on websites: With HTML5 coding, websites can track your location even on your personal computer.

In short, travel companies use the point-of-sale, chosen payment currency and location to determine the price quote you are given for your tickets. This is why you can end up paying more than someone in a different part of the world using a different currency, even if you’re looking at the exact same date, airline and flight!

So how can you potentially save money on flight tickets without losing an afternoon to searching or getting penalized for your location?  Simple. Just keep sites from being able to track your searches, history, and browser cookies using a VPN.

Quick Tips to Cheaper Flights

A VPN may actually help you save money on flight tickets. Here are some helpful tips:

1.  Change IP address to a low-income country

Use SaferVPN to get a new anonymous IP address from another country. Watch this video to learn how! Changing to a country with lower incomes may often do the trick. Also, try changing to an IP from the country where the airline is based. So if you’re traveling with a Brazilian airline, change to a Brazilian IP address, and chances are good that prices may be lower.

Remember that prices always fluctuate depending on the country you’re searching from. Farecompare suggests that the best time to get the lowest prices on airfare in the U.S. is Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET.

2.  Change IP address to reset price hikes

As explained above, when travel websites see that you’re repeatedly searching for the same flights from the same IP address, they’ll hike up the prices. Simply connect to one of SaferVPN’s servers, even within your own country. Then, browse back onto your favorite flight website, and you are likely to see the prices instantly drop back to where they started.

3.  Clear your cookies

Utilizing your browser’s private mode to prevent storing cookies, as well as clearing or disabling your cookies, will help prevent tracking from travel websites. However, without using a VPN, you can still be traced through your IP address.

4.  Use international versions of websites

Prices may differ by the origin of the website you’re using. Try browsing through alternative versions, such as the British (, French (.fr) or Canadian (.ca). However, without using a VPN, the travel site may not reduce the price, and it may simply redirect you to your local website.

How to Save Money on Flight Tickets Using SaferVPN

Here’s an example we came across today when searching for flights that demonstrate different prices depending on where you search from, and how changing that with a VPN may save you money. We don’t guarantee you’ll get the same results we did, but the chances are pretty good that searching for a flight using our method described below will offer the opportunity to choose from lower priced flights. We recommend checking a few different times and trying with different IP addresses to see the differences in prices that may be available.

First, we connected to our VPN in Romania. It forwarded us to the Irish website. Next, we searched for flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney, Australia (SYD), from April 1st to April 14th, 2017, and we found a flight for 1,665.01, the equivalent of US$1,753.29.

Then, we simply changed our virtual identity by connecting to SaferVPN’s server in the US and did the exact same search. Note that the airline, date, and flight times are exactly the same in order to show a 1-to-1 comparison.

With the change in IP address to the US, we were quoted US$1346.82. Simply by switching server locations using SaferVPN, we found the exact same flight priced at US$406.47 less than our original search amount. That’s 30% in savings! This was because we booked a flight from the US rather than from Romania. Please note that searching from the US will not necessarily guarantee you a better price, but when we tried it, it did, so it’s worth a try!

This is just one of many examples of how you may be able to use a VPN to save money on flight tickets, so be sure to use a VPN to change your IP address and compare the results before you buy!

One of our happy customers also managed to save money on flight tickets. Here’s what they had to say:

Is it Legal to Use a VPN When Booking Flights?

We contacted United’s customer service to learn their standpoint about taking advantage of price discrepancies abroad to book flights. The lovely customer service representative acknowledged that they do post different prices in different countries and that different travel agents (i.e., Expedia, Kayak, etc.) post different prices. Moreover, they work with different licensed travel agents in different countries, and that’s a big reason for the price differences.

We asked specifically about VPNs, and she said there’s nothing in their contract of carriage against using a VPN. We even told her that we were looking at the Brazilian United site through our VPN while we were chatting with her, and she said we could book that flight with no worries!

Essentially, you can expect to see different prices for different travel agents and countries; it’s not a glitch, it’s just that prices vary from place to place. They also said that it is totally legal to use a VPN to book flights from another geographic location.

To verify this, we e-mailed about it, and here’s our correspondence:

As you can see, neither the airline nor the travel agent has a problem with us using a VPN to purchase tickets at a cheaper price.

In today’s e-commerce savvy world, all e-tailers use some kind of pricing segmentation to take advantage of higher purchasing power, but with a VPN, it’s easy to hop between the different price segments!

Let’s not neglect to mention that VPNs have endless other benefits as well, such as: providing additional security by sending your encrypted information through a virtual web tunnel, allowing you to unblock and stream websites, games, music and every other kind of media, and letting you browse the internet with the fastest VPN speed available!
